Our goal was to describe the clinico-radiological features and the natural history of hepatic involvement in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). A retrospective evaluation of all liver biopsies performed on SSc patients over a period of 6 years was performed. A total of 11 patients (mean age 50+/-19 years, range 20-76 years) were included. Mean disease duration was 10.6+/-6.2 years, (range 6 months to 25 years). Nine of the 11 patients had limited cutaneous SSc, while the remaining two had diffuse cutaneous SSc. Five patients had overlap with another connective tissue disease (1 a mixed connective tissue disease, 1 a polymyositis, 1 an anti-synthetase syndrome, and 2 a systemic lupus erythematosus). Hepatic involvement was the first presentation of systemic sclerosis in three patients and was the unique manifestation in one patient. The most characteristic features of hepatic involvement were hepatomegaly in seven patients, (mean+/-s.d.) 8.8+/-2.5 cm, including two cases of liver enlargement in the absence of hepat f30f4ceada
